Snow shoveling, salty comfort foods, even stress from the upcoming Super Bowl can put an unhealthy heart over the edge. To keep your pumper thumping, the American Health Association (AHA) has deemed February American Heart Month — and not just the Valentine kind. “There’s so much people can do to keep their heart healthy,” said Holly Chassee, CEO of Lee Regional Visiting Nurse Association. “Concentrate on the little things that will make a big difference in the end.” Minor lifestyle adjustments like parking your car farther away, cutting back (even slightly) on cigarettes and caffeine, or dialing down how many fistfuls of potato chips you take in watching the Steelers and Packers on Sunday are all good first steps. The government’s recent decision to halve the recommended amount of salt intake for older Americans also puts the spotlight on the harm too much sodium can do to the heart. Lowering the zest will take some getting used to, however. “It takes a while for your taste buds to adjust to less salt in your food,” said nutritionist Peter Stanton, director of The Nutrition Center in Great Barrington. He suggested replacing sodium with spices and herbs, which are packed with nutrients and flavorful to boot. In the Berkshires, you can check your heart out at numerous blood pressure screenings that are often listed in The Eagle’s calendar section. The Lee VNA is among those that host frequent blood pressure screenings, one of which will be today at the Stop & Shop on Merrill Road in Pittsfield from 10 to 11:30 a.m.

Heart loveRead nutrition labels — look for lower sodium and fat levels.Stay away from canned foods — sodium content is typically higher.Find a way to get some winter exercise: If you’re well enough, walk indoors at the mall, visit a health club, or use the stairs in your own home to get your heart going. At group gatherings like the Super Bowl, dole out individual portions instead of dipping into big bowls. Also, bring your own healthy snack to add to the spread, like a veggie tray with fat-free sour cream.Source: Holly Chassee, CEO, Lee Regional VNA
